Hayward Tyler provides molten salt pumps for test duties

Hayward Tyler has shipped four high-temperature molten salt pumps for a state-of-the-art integrated effects test (IET) facility that is being developed by Southern Co and TerraPower to advance the molten chloride fast reactor (MCFR).

MCFR is a fourth-generation, molten salt nuclear technology designed to enable low-cost, economy-wide decarbonization.

The IET, located at TerraPower’s facility in Everett, Washington, USA, is a non-nuclear, externally heated multi-loop system intended to validate integrated operation of MCFR systems as well as to demonstrate multiple auxiliary MCFR functions.

Southern Co is collaborating with TerraPower, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and a number of partners to explore, develop and demonstrate the MCFR under DOE’s Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC-15) program.

Hayward Tyler’s IET pumps were engineered with the reactor developer and will be used to investigate a number of operating scenarios within the test loop. The pumps can handle molten salt up to 750°C (1380°F).
